COMMUNITY STATEMENT REGARDING MARY AND JACOB HUGHES OF SPIRITKEEPERS NATIVE AMERICAN CHURCH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DETROIT, MICHIGAN – Mary and Jacob Hughes are parents, partners, and members of a faith-based spiritual community known as SpiritKeepers Native American Church. They are known to many for their generosity, devotion to family, and commitment to spiritual practice grounded in prayer, ceremony, and care for others.

Recently, Mary and Jacob were detained during a public event in Missouri in connection with allegations that remain pending. No findings of guilt have been made, and the matter is currently before the legal process.

This statement is shared to ensure that the public conversation remains grounded in humanity, fairness, and respect. Mary and Jacob are the parents of two children and have already endured significant hardship in recent years, including the loss of their belongings in a fire and repeated challenges connected to their spiritual identity.

Members of their community emphasize that SpiritKeepers is an ecclesiastical and tribal spiritual tradition, and that Mary and Jacob’s lives have been centered on service, family, and faith—not harm, exploitation, or malice.

The community asks for compassion, restraint, and respect for due process, especially where families and children are concerned. We believe that people should be seen in their full humanity, not reduced to headlines or assumptions.

This statement is not intended to argue legal outcomes, but to affirm dignity, presumption of innocence, and the importance of understanding spiritual and cultural context in an increasingly complex world.
